Kevin Bundy: Climate Change in California

Kevin Bundy works for the Center for Biological Diversity where he uses existing laws to help fight climate change. Most scientists agree that humans are a the main culprit when it comes to climate change as we are responsible for releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere through driving emissions and non renewable electrical generation. These greenhouse gases can change Earth's climate and impact human health as well as natural ecosystems.  Kevin says humans are the only ones that can slow down the effects of climate change.

When asked how will climate change affect California, Kevin says that it already has and if we don't act soon it will just get get worse. According to Kevin, we are already seeing more rain than snow in California and this trend is expected to continue in the years to come. Kevin says California is a state that is dependent on moving water. Water from Northern California feeds the farms in the the Central Valley and the cities. The water comes from the Sierra, which is currently like a water storage tank for California where the water starts out as snow before melting into water and trickling into rivers on the way to the Pacific Ocean. If that water is falls as rain rather than snow we won’t have the much needed water storage necessary to provide enough water to the Central Valley farms.

Fortunately, Kevin says that there are many individual choices that we can make to help the planet. Taking the bus, carpooling, or riding a bike instead of taking your own vehicle everywhere can help drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Kevin says, if you can inspire others to do the same it will help slow climate change even more. Kevin says the time to start making a difference in the fight against climate change is now. Afterall, we are responsible for the world we leave for our children and grandchildren.
