The ABC7 Newsroom Experience

News anchor Cheryl Jennings
 By: Geffen Hochschild

When watching Channel ABC7 news from a television screen, us viewers don’t have to do anything.  They do it all for us.  The daily routine of the newscast seems to effortlessly blur into informative entertainment. The information that we receive every day from this organization smoothly enters our homes.  As viewers, we may take the news that we have for granted.  All the anchors, journalists, reporters, and the board constantly work beyond their hours to give us the best news we can receive.  And all we have to do is watch.  The Earthscope team had the opportunity to view just part of their routine, and we were all thoroughly amazed.
The Earthscope team arrived in time for the eleven o’clock AM news segment.  We were all able to experience the casting of live TV, and everything in between. It was truly amazing how the staff of only four in the newsroom, with the help of the board, were able to cover such enlightening topics in their slotted amount of time.  It raised questions from all of the Earthscope team: how does such a professional newscasting arise so well? The answer is expertise and dedication.  All of the staff is exceptional at what they do and have had incredible experiences. We had the chance to hear both of the anchors’ backgrounds.
Cheryl Jennings may be the very definition of dedication herself.  Her story was originally filled with denial and rejection, but she held firm to her belief in journalism.  She started her career as an intern, picking up incredible loads of responsibility with an incredible attitude.  She had to pick up all of the dirty work; including the night shifts, paperwork, and virtually everything that others left behind.  Jennings worked very hard and completed everything she was asked to, since she was determined to become a reporter.  It became especially difficult for her at times, as there were no role models for her to look after.  At the time she was contemplating entering journalism, there were very few women on television at all.  Still, Jennings persevered through the challenges she faced and worked her way up to become one of the most well-known news anchors in history.  Even though she’s now at the “top” of it all, she works hard every day to keep up her amazing reputation.
The experience of the newsroom was incredible.  Both the work ethic and the backgrounds of the people within those walls were truly inspiring.  It goes to show that good effort and dedication can really pay off.  The daily news channel is proof of it.
